Best Travel & Vlog Mics? | Zoom H1/H1n vs Sony ICD-UX560 | + Rode VideoMicro

I recently switched from the Zoom H1 and Rode VideoMic Pro to the Sony ICD-UX560 Recorder and budget Rode VideoMicro, plus the Aputure A.Lav EZ Lapel Mic.
In this video I review these affordable and portable microphones, explain why I’m switching my travel vlog setup and give a full comparison of the recorders – including clean audio samples.

If you want to hear what the Rode VideoMicro sounds like my recent vlog from Budapest was filmed entirely using it:

  • Use a battery bank connected to the Zoom via the USB input instead of using AA batteries. You can get relatively small 10,000 mah battery banks. You could attach it to your holster via Velcro tape.

  • Very concise and well done review! I'm so happy I have a new option. The convinience factor of the rechargeablity and small size is so much helpful

  • A cheap Android phone with headphones jack can deliver better audio quality than the Sony recorder when a mic is conected, plus you have a lot of very good apps, with gain control, sampling, etc. Only advantage for Sony is weight and size

  • Great review with samples. I watched a few videos on this Sony mic and none were as straight to the point as this one. I just purchased this mic

  • Here’s the big difference with a loud live band the mic on the Sony would get overwhelmed the zoom would handle it better.

  • Your reason for not using AA batteries seems flawed. You said you took a detour after your H1 recorder died to find new batteries (which wasted time) The alternative would have been that you’d have to sit at an outlet or plug in via portable USB brick. You still would have had down time.

  • Great information! Does the Sony supply power to an external mic? I plan to use it with the Roland Binaural microphone earphone CS-10EM for ASMR walks in the rain. Would that work? Thanks!

  • Jessica Bouma I have about 4-5 voice recorders that's broke and what to get the files I want to be able to hear the files. You know how a pc gets broke and you have things on a pc but you need whatever that's on it. It's the same way I want whats on my recorders. If I can send the broke recorders to a company that can get the files off of it and put it on something to where I can hear it and make copies ??

  • I have yet to find a recorder with a decent screen that resists scratches. They always seem to have cheap plastic. My H5 came with a hard case and isn't pocket sized, so maybe it's fine, but I've had a few Olympus pocket records and the screens were garbage.

  • AA tend not to hold charges well??? Have you ever tried Eneloop?? If you are into audio/video/fotography I would be very surprised if you ever heard from this battery brand. If you stick them fully loaded in a drawer and leave them for a year, they will still have over 90% charge.

  • Good video. Lithium ion batteries are not particularly sustainable either but I agree they are more convenient than replaceable AAA’s. Any RF interference issues with the Sony out on the city/street with cell phones and so on out and about?

  • Thanks for your video! Can you help me on choose one n these mics or an audio recorder like the zoom H1, I'm musician and I need something to record good audio quality but lightweight and not so expensive. The video is going to be catched with the phone, but don't know what option is better to acoustic spanish guitar and singing.

    Have a good day!
